The term enlightenment comes from the root word enlighten, which means to shed light or understanding on a given topic. In English, we often use the phrase “enlighten me” to promote further discussion in order to understand something more deeply. In spirituality, enlightenment is often used to describe an advanced state of being, but this is not its true meaning.
Enlightenment is a process, a destructive process that gradually destroys everything that is false and temporary like most things of this world. It is not an easy process because everything we know that defines us is removed and we are left with only the essence of who we are or what Yoga calls the Self, which is essentially God. Consequently, the correct term to use for those who have realized the Self is called God Realization.
In fact, we gradually come to realize that everything is God and we are just the cells in God’s manifested Universal Body. None of the religions can teach us this because we have to let go of all our human conditioning and education, and experience this truth in a universal language of sound and vision. In order for this to occur, one’s mind must be fully integrated because what we see is unlike anything of this world and if our minds are toxic, the experience can be traumatic.
Swami Satchidananda said we can see God if we want to, but if our minds are not pure, we may see a terrifying demon instead. Even the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali say we can get siddhis or supernatural experiences with the use of certain herbs (or drugs), mantra repetition, asceticism (renunciation), or by samadhi but this is not God Realization but the powers that come to us on the path to God Realization.
Most of the Masters advise not getting caught up in the siddhis that may come to us during the process of enlightenment because it is an impediment on the path to God Realization. It is also dangerous because the ego is still there and there is a tendency to want to take control when only God is in control. We have witnessed many so called Gurus and spiritual leaders become corrupted by their siddhis causing confusion, grief, and even death to some of their followers. “Absolute power corrupts absolutely” because only God has power. None of us can claim it for our own. This is what is meant by not eating the forbidden fruit. We cannot use our will or God’s power for anything or anyone, but we can be used as instruments for the Higher Will and this is why preparation for this experience is so important.
We can prepare for God Realization up to a point, but after that, the final Samadhi happens without our effort. To prepare, we have to go within and deepen our understanding of Nature. Generally, there are four forms or levels of Nature or Prakriti that we need to understand before God Realization can occur. First, we understand and deepen our awareness of the purpose of the gross physical level of the sensory world. Second, we go deeper within to the more subtle, deeper abstract meaning of these physical objects. Third, we begin to understand the nature of the mind alone devoid of these objects, and finally once the mind has been purified, we experience the “I consciousness.” However, there is still a separation between this “I” and the “i”, or ego which is still there, so we can be pulled back into the world again.
Each of these stages is a form of Samadhi, which is distinguished, but only in the non-distinguished Samadhi do we experience the absolute true consciousness because here “the Supreme Self shines alone”. But even here, this is not the final Samadhi. The final and rare Samadhi occurs when even this impression of the Supreme Self is wiped out and we become That. In other words, there is no longer any separation between you and the I AM.
As we can read, this process requires letting go of everything we have known, even our own identity. In other words, we experience the death of everything we have known. This may sound daunting, but this is where a leap of faith and trust can really help us along. Keep in mind the reality that we see here is false and temporary, and death a certainty. But what dies is just the falseness of that reality. Once we have awakened beyond the dream and understand who we really are, there is no more death for us because there is no identification with the body, which is just karma.
One of the cool things about the process of enlightenment is that one gets to see how one ended up here, a string of receding past lives that leads to one after another in a mental continuum. We may not take our body and material things with us when we die, but we do take our minds. Once we see this perpetual wheel of motion, our understanding really begins to deepen and everything begins to make sense. We suddenly understand our responsibility in creating our own human existence, which is the beginning of mental well being because there is no one to blame for our lives but ourselves. In short, we understand how we have created our own little reality that has blinded us to the Greater Reality.
Once this understanding occurs, life on earth is not really a big deal, just a stage where people come to work out their personal dramas. But once one has connected to the Master Mind that created the universe, the pain and suffering we undergo to come to this awareness is worth it. Life on earth can be crazy especially when we invest everything into our lives and end up losing everything in the end.
However, in God Realization, we shift awareness from the little i to the big I, which shatters the ego and pops all the bubbles of our former reality. The mind is then freed up from the imprisoning rhythms of human consciousness and experiences the vastness of creation, which is so incredibly awesome that you wonder how you could have gotten so caught up in the human dramas.
Enlightenment is the process that destroys everything leading to God Realization. Although we can never truly know God in Its entirety, we can still experience the entirety of God and that is what is so awesomely amazing about this experience and why it is worth all the suffering and loss. We may lose everything in this little world, a grain of sand in a universe of over 500 billion galaxies, but we gain the entire universe and have the awareness of knowing and experiencing our own immortality.
Enlightenment is difficult, but the aftermath of the destructive process one has to undergo is one of supreme bliss, a free mind floating in empty space, seeing, feeling all like the Creator. Enlightenment brings real and lasting peace because we are so above and beyond the earth’s troubles. It is the end of sorrow and the beginning of Existence, Knowledge, Bliss.
